Iran firmly rejected baseless claims by the United Arab Emirates regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz during a meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Speaking at the 113th session of the organization’s legal committee, Pouria Kolivand, Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the IMO, dismissed the UAE paper as “based on a selective narrative, unfounded claims, and legally unsupported conclusions.”
The UAE submitted a paper to the IMO on Monday, claiming that Iran has threatened vessels with the presence of sea mines in and around the Strait of Hormuz and reportedly established a toll system for vessels passing through the strait.
“These actions are clear violations of international law and are contrary to the principles and purposes of the IMO,” the UAE paper claimed.
Kolivand stressed that the paper ignores the root causes of current regional conditions, noting that the conditions in the region, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, are the direct result of the illegal and savage war of aggression by the U.S. and the Israeli regime against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The war, he said, was carried out in clear violation of the fundamental principles of the United Nations Charter, especially the principle of the prohibition of the use of force.
He added that states participating in or facilitating acts of aggression bear international responsibility under international law.
Kolivand also underlined that the UAE’s proposal to assign responsibility to Iran over the strait faces “serious legal and technical flaws.”
Despite tensions, he said the Strait of Hormuz has remained open, with uninterrupted maritime traffic.
Non-belligerent vessels have continued safe passage in coordination with Iranian authorities and in compliance with declared safety measures, he added.
