Rooftop Coup, Shockwaves in Venice: Has Israel’s Social Contract Collapsed?

The documentary NAZA, by revealing information about the Israeli military’s targeting mechanisms and provoking a fierce backlash from Israeli officials, has once again brought deep fractures within Israeli society and the security establishment—and a crisis in the regime’s official narrative of the Gaza war—to the center of global attention.

One of the defining sensations of this year’s Venice Film Festival was the premiere and triumph of the cinematic documentary NAZA in the main competition of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, where it secured the Special Jury Prize. This screening, which was met with a continuous 25-minute standing ovation, is not only a landmark achievement in documentary cinema, but far beyond that, represents an epistemological rupture in the official narrative of the Zionist regime. A collaborative work by Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor—developed under the guidance of producers such as Jonathan Glazer and backed by media support from The Guardian—the film lifts the veil on an institutional, bureaucratic term forged in the classified chambers of Israeli military counter-intelligence: “NAZA.” This term effectively designates a formula by which the military calculates in advance the number of innocent human lives that may be permissibly sacrificed to eliminate a single target.

The film—the result of three years of clandestine documentation on the rooftops of Tel Aviv, utilizing digital camouflage to conceal the identities of 24 senior intelligence officers and aerial system operators—demonstrates that the atrocities committed in Gaza are not sporadic behavioral aberrations on the battlefield, but rather the structured output of an AI-driven, algorithmic policy of death. These are engineered protocols in which the slaughter of up to 500 civilians to eliminate a single target is technically and cold-bloodedly authorized and executed (through systems such as “Lavender” and “Where’s Daddy?”).

The reaction of Tel Aviv officials to this documentary was fraught with fury and panic. The Chief of the General Staff condemned the film as a blow to Israel’s very legitimacy, while Netanyahu labeled it antisemitic incitement. The backlash escalated to the point where the Minister of Culture demanded the revocation of the filmmakers’ citizenship and called for the intervention of the internal security service (Shin Bet) on charges of treason. Such a level of terror and indignation reveals that Israel’s historical and deceptive claim of maintaining a “moral army” is facing total collapse.

The declaration of solidarity by more than 200 prominent Israeli filmmakers, academics, and cultural figures with the documentary’s crew dealt a decisive blow to the myth of national consensus, demonstrating that the mechanisms of surveillance and hegemony within Zionist settler society have reached a critical tipping point and a structural fracture.

Fleeing the Promised Hell: The Elites Who Packed Their Bags with the Documentary NAZA

The reality is that Israeli society does not constitute an authentic, cohesive nation, but rather an artificial aggregate of disparate immigrants whose cohesion hinged entirely on two pillars: an invincible military force and the image of victimhood manufactured for them by the West. Consequently, the moment this regime reaches a dead end on the battlefield, the bonds of this fabricated society disintegrate from within. The confessions of the 24 officers in NAZA signify a rebellion of Israel’s elite and technocratic class—the very demographic that sustained the Air Force, Cyber Unit 8200, the high-tech sector, and the universities. This professional class now feels it has surrendered power to forces holding all of Israel hostage: radical religious settlers who, driven by fascist delusions, are driving society toward utter ruin. In this class-ideological confrontation, irreparable chasms have opened:

  • The Haredi Revolt and the Military’s Perpetual Crisis: The army was historically the sole melting pot that brought disparate immigrant factions together, imparting a shared sense of cohesion; now, that very linchpin has broken. Under the strain of an attritional war with the Axis of Resistance, the military faces a severe personnel shortage. Yet, the ultra-Orthodox (Haredim) steadfastly refuse conscription. Defying court rulings, they clash violently with police in the streets, chanting, “We will die rather than enlist.” Conversely, the secular and mainstream segments of society—who shoulder the brunt of active combat, casualties, and taxation—are enraged, declaring they are no longer willing to sacrifice their lives for a government whose religious supporters are exempt from service and live off the state.
  • The Fault Line of Distrust in Tel Aviv: Freeing the Captives or Clinging to Power? The divide between the families of the captives and Israel’s political leadership has devolved into an acute crisis of confidence. The hundreds of thousands demonstrating in the streets of Tel Aviv have confronted the bitter truth that Netanyahu and his extremist ministers (such as Ben-Gvir and Smotrich) have sacrificed the lives of the hostages to preserve their own grip on power and feed their ideological dogmas. This state of affairs has obliterated public trust in the regime at its root, as society increasingly feels that a state apparatus sworn to protect the lives of its citizens is actively sacrificing them for its own political survival.
  • Demographic Attrition and the Phenomenon of Reverse Migration (Yerida): Israel is currently undergoing an unprecedented wave of brain drain and capital flight; physicians, researchers, and technology specialists are leaving the territory one after another. The specialists who delivered their clandestine rooftop testimonies in NAZA exemplify those who have readied their second passports to depart. This mass exodus of the elite illustrates that the longstanding claim of Israel serving as a “safe haven” for the Jewish people has completely unraveled, reducing this geography in practice to an isolated, futureless garrison under siege.

The Ashes of the Ben-Gurion Doctrine and the Collapse of the Zionist Polity

The deep internal fractures and bitter infighting within Israel stem directly from the regime’s military defeats across the region. From its founding, Israel anchored its security architecture upon David Ben-Gurion’s tripartite doctrine:

  • Establishing fear and deterrence (such that no adversary would dare launch an attack);
  • Rapid intelligence early warning (swiftly preempting threats via espionage);
  • Waging decisive, swift offensive warfare on enemy territory (resolving conflicts within days while shielding Israeli cities from harm).

However, this historic formula has been entirely neutralized by the direct, assertive intervention of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the unification of the Resistance front.

  • The Heart of Tel Aviv and Haifa Turned into the Frontline: Historic and direct retaliatory strikes by Iran, coupled with simultaneous barrages from various resistance fronts, obliterated the myth of the Iron Dome’s invincibility. The impact of ballistic missiles and pinpoint-accurate drones over Tel Aviv and Haifa revealed that no roof remains safe over the heads of the Zionists. Thus, for the first time in the regime’s history, hundreds of thousands of settlers tasted the bitter reality of displacement and degrading shelter life, laying bare across Israeli society that “guaranteed security” was nothing more than an illusion.
  • A War of Attrition: A Nightmare Israel Was Never Built to Endure: Israel’s economic and social architecture was never engineered for protracted, attritional warfare and lacks the endurance to withstand it. For them, a prolonged conflict means the complete collapse of tourism, the closure of seaports, downgraded credit ratings, and pervasive exhaustion among soldiers who no longer possess the morale to fight. The Israeli military has reached a total impasse in this quagmire; it can neither secure a decisive victory nor contain the calculated counterstrikes of the Resistance. This military impotence has injected profound despair and fury into the domestic populace, preparing the ground for seismic exposés such as the documentary NAZA.

The whistleblowers in NAZA and elements within the military establishment have converged on a shared realization: despite unleashing the most savage instruments of destruction and discarding every parameter of international law, the military has reached a dead end in its efforts to subdue the Resistance network. This pervasive sense of defeat and the failure to achieve enduring security in the face of the power of the Islamic Republic and its allies has driven the regime’s innermost security circles to the point of reckoning and open confession.

The vehement outrage of Tel Aviv officials toward the creators of NAZA underscores that this regime, in its downward spiral, has completely stripped away its democratic veneer to adopt an overtly fascist character. A government that denounces its own filmmakers as “traitors,” deploys secret police to hunt down dissident officers, and demands the revocation of citizenship and identity documents from its artists can never again lay claim to freedom or democracy. Such extreme measures reveal that they cannot bear even the sight of their true reflection in the mirror. Furthermore, the magnitude of these atrocities has reached such proportions that Western propaganda apparatuses can no longer obscure them; the 25-minute ovation at the Venice Film Festival stood as a global manifestation of deep public revulsion. Today, the situation has escalated to where Israel is recognized and condemned as a systematized killing machine not only by the Resistance front and the nations of the world, but even by its own military personnel.
