Iran calls on IAEA to denounce U.S. threats to attack Iranian nuclear power plant

Iran’s permanent mission in Vienna has called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to denounce U.S. threats to attack an Iranian nuclear power plant, warning that such an action would violate international norms and risk severe humanitarian and environmental consequences.

In a statement posted Monday on X, the mission said: “U.S. officials are publicly threatening to attack a nuclear power plant! This is a serious material breach of international norms prohibiting any attack on nuclear power plants. If carried out, it will have devastating and long‑lasting negative effects on human life and the environment in the Persian Gulf region and far beyond.”

Urging the International Atomic Energy Agency to intervene immediately, the mission emphasized: “IAEA must act swiftly in denouncing those threats and reminding the U.S. of catastrophic consequences of such dangerous acts.”

The statement also asserted that any such strike would amount to a violation of foundational international legal principles.

“All acts of the aggressors are definitely serious and flagrant violations of cardinal principles of international law as well as the norms of jus in bello and thus entail their full international responsibility for their internationally wrongful acts and are liable for all resulting consequences, whether direct or indirect, within or outside the Persian Gulf region,” it said.

The mission shared the post after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened that his country “will hit and obliterate” Iran’s various power plants, “starting with the biggest one first” if Iran does not fully open the Strait of Hormuz.
