Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf arrived in Baghdad on Wednesday at the head of a high-ranking parliamentary delegation for talks with senior Iraqi officials on bilateral relations and key regional developments.

Upon arriving in Baghdad, Ghalibaf and the Iranian parliamentary delegation visited the site where Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis were killed in a U.S. drone strike near Baghdad in January 2020. The Iranian parliamentarians paid tribute to the two commanders.

During his visit, Ghalibaf met with Iraqi President Nizar Mohammed Saeed al-Amidi, as well as Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, holding discussions on key issues concerning relations between Tehran and Baghdad.

The talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and expanding political, economic and security coordination between Iran and Iraq. Regional developments and the latest political and security situation in West Asia were also among the issues discussed during Ghalibaf’s meetings with Iraqi officials.

Ghalibaf’s visit comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing security challenges, giving the high-level talks added significance for Tehran-Baghdad coordination. Iranian officials have described the visit as an effort to further consolidate strategic relations with Iraq and promote greater cooperation on issues affecting regional stability.

During his meeting with Prime Minister al-Zaidi, the two sides also reviewed bilateral ties and issues of mutual interest. The Iraqi prime minister’s office said Baghdad appreciated Iran’s positions and support, underscoring the importance of continued cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also met with his Iraqi counterpart, Haibat al-Halbousi, during his visit to Baghdad, discussing bilateral issues.

The Iranian parliamentary delegation, headed by Ghalibaf, visited the Iraqi parliament on Wednesday, hours after arriving in Baghdad, where talks were held with al-Halbousi and a number of Iraqi lawmakers.

The two speakers then held a private meeting.

Ghalibaf also presented a gift from the Iranian Parliament to his Iraqi counterpart, who, in turn, presented a commemorative gift from the Iraqi parliament to the Iranian speaker.

Ghalibaf is scheduled to hold further meetings with senior Iraqi political and parliamentary officials during his visit, as Tehran and Baghdad seek to strengthen coordination and address shared political, economic and security concerns.
