Ghalibaf made the remarks late on Friday after arriving in Islamabad, Pakistan, for talks with U.S. representatives. He is leading the Iranian delegation, which also includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. The U.S. team is led by Vice President JD Vance.
Iran has come to Islamabad in good faith, although it does not trust the United States, Ghalibaf said, according to Pakistan’s Geo News. He cited Washington’s failure to fulfill its commitments during previous negotiations between the two sides.
The last round of Tehran–Washington talks, aimed at resolving the standoff over Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, was held on February 26, two days before the war launched by Israel and the United States against the Islamic Republic.
Fighting was paused on Wednesday after 40 days under a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan.
The Islamabad negotiations, set to begin on Saturday, aim to bring a permanent end to the war. Ghalibaf said the United States should present a credible plan that includes recognition of Iran’s rights.
