Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summons European ambassadors

In response to a recent resolution adopted by the European Union against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally summoned the ambassadors of EU member states. The move comes as part of Tehran’s diplomatic response to what it has described as a political, illegal, and provocative action.

Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the summoning of European ambassadors over the past two days was a direct reaction to a decision taken in Brussels to label the IRGC as a terrorist organization. He noted that around 20 EU member states currently maintain embassies in Tehran.

According to Baghaei, the summons was intended to formally convey Iran’s protest against the EU’s decision, which he described as being in line with hostile political measures pursued by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed that although the EU measure carries no practical or legal effect, it represents an extremely inappropriate, unjustified, and unlawful move under international norms. He added that no country would accept such characterizations being applied to an official branch of its armed forces.

Baghaei said the Islamic Republic of Iran has responded at multiple levels to the decision, including the issuance of a strong official statement by the Foreign Ministry condemning the move.

He emphasized that summoning ambassadors is a minimal yet standard diplomatic, political, and legal step, typically accompanied by the delivery of a formal note of protest to register a country’s objection to an unlawful action by another party.

He concluded by stating that additional measures are currently under review and consideration, and that further details will be announced once final decisions have been made.
