Iran, Russia Reaffirm Strategic Ties in Moscow Security Talks

Moscow – Iran View 24 | May 28, 2025
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu met with his Iranian counterpart, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, in Moscow on Wednesday, reaffirming the two nations’ commitment to expanding bilateral relations under their 20-year strategic partnership agreement.

During the meeting, Shoigu highlighted the active development of Tehran-Moscow ties across all sectors, citing frequent interactions between Iranian and Russian leaders as evidence of a “high level of political dialogue.”

Shoigu also referenced the Strategic Partnership Treaty signed by Presidents Masoud Pezeshkian and Vladimir Putin in January, emphasizing that the agreement lays a comprehensive legal foundation for cooperation in political, security, economic, cultural, and social domains.

For his part, Ahmadian underscored the importance of fully implementing bilateral agreements, noting that doing so would significantly boost trade and economic exchanges between Iran and Russia.

Both officials also stressed the need to enhance regional and international cooperation, as Iran and Russia continue to face unilateral Western sanctions and seek to align their strategic interests in various arenas.

The landmark 20-year treaty—ratified by President Putin in April and approved by the Iranian Parliament in May—covers a wide spectrum of cooperation, including:

  • Defense and counterterrorism collaboration

  • Joint ventures in energy and industry

  • Financial system integration

  • Development of transport and infrastructure

  • Agricultural cooperation

  • Cultural, scientific, and technological exchanges

The Moscow meeting marks a continuation of deepening strategic ties between the two nations, positioning Iran and Russia as key partners in reshaping regional alliances and multipolar global dynamics.
