In the lead-up to the upcoming session of the IAEA Board of Governors, the permanent representatives of Iran, China, and Russia met in Vienna to hold trilateral consultations aimed at coordinating their positions on key agenda items.
Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, announced the meeting on Thursday via a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Met today with my dear colleagues- Permanent Representatives of China and Iran- to compare notes on the eve of the forthcoming IAEA Board of Governors session. This trilateral format proves to be very useful. It helps coordinate closely our positions.”
The forthcoming Board of Governors meeting is scheduled to be held in mid-June at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna.
Key topics expected to dominate the session include a review of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA, particularly in areas of verification and inspection under the Safeguards Agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
Another focal point of the meeting will be the comprehensive report by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, which evaluates Iran’s nuclear program in light of the most recent Board resolution.
The trilateral meeting reflects a growing level of strategic coordination between Iran, China, and Russia on nuclear diplomacy, particularly amid increased scrutiny of Tehran’s nuclear activities by Western states.
