Although the IRGC has not issued an official announcement regarding the conduct of naval exercises in the Strait of Hormuz, CENTCOM released a statement acknowledging Iran’s right to operate in international waters and airspace while calling for adherence to safety standards during the drills and portraying them as a potential risk to regional shipping.
According to the statement, CENTCOM described the Strait of Hormuz as an international waterway and a critical artery for global trade, stressing that approximately 100 commercial vessels transit the strait each day. At the same time, U.S. forces explicitly declared their recognition of Iran’s right to carry out lawful and professional activities in international waters and airspace.
CENTCOM also adopted a warning tone, claiming it would not tolerate any unsafe actions by the IRGC and urging Iran to conduct its military exercises and movements in a safe and professional manner, while refraining from steps that could lead to heightened tensions.
This position comes as the Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly stressed that its military drills are defensive and deterrent in nature and are conducted in accordance with international law.
