Baghaei: Peaceful use of nuclear energy Iran’s inalienable right

Esmaeil Baghaei, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, speaking on a radio program “Be Vaghte Goftegoo” (Time for Dialogue), referred to the legal framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), stressing that the NPT has been formulated to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and recognizes the right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy for all members under Article IV.

Recalling Iran’s membership in the NPT since 1970, he stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran has remained committed to its obligations throughout these years while simultaneously insisting on exercising its stipulated rights under the treaty. According to him, some unilateral and political interpretations by nuclear-weapon states have cast suspicion upon the peaceful use of other countries.

Baghaei also referenced Iran’s 1974 proposal to establish a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone in West Asia, asserting that Iran’s nuclear program has always been transparent, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has continuously monitored it based on the Safeguards Agreement.
