Barcelona Cuts Ties with “Israel”: Twin-City Agreement with Tel Aviv Suspended

IranView24 | International -31 May–

In a bold and symbolic move, the Barcelona City Council has voted to suspend all institutional relations with the Israeli regime, including the long-standing twin-city agreement with Tel Aviv, signed in 1998.

A Clear Break with Tel Aviv

Backed by the ruling Socialist Party, leftist groups, and Catalan independence supporters, the decision reflects growing outrage over Israel’s military operations in Gaza and its disregard for international law.

The council declared the suspension will remain in place until the Israeli regime respects international law and guarantees the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.

Barcelona’s Socialist mayor, Jaume Collboni, stated:

“The level of suffering and death in Gaza over the past 18 months, coupled with Israel’s relentless aggression, makes it ethically impossible to maintain symbolic relations with Tel Aviv.”

Hamas Welcomes the Move

The Palestinian resistance group Hamas welcomed Barcelona’s decision, calling it:

“A powerful act of solidarity with the Palestinian people in the face of genocide and occupation.”

In an official statement, Hamas urged governments and cities worldwide to follow suit by boycotting the rogue Israeli regime, isolating it internationally, and holding it accountable for crimes in Gaza—especially its starvation policies and civilian massacres.

IranView24 Analysis:

Barcelona’s decision is more than a local diplomatic gesture—it signals a global shift in public opinion against Israeli impunity. As atrocities in Gaza continue, even symbolic relationships like sister-city agreements are being reevaluated by international communities.

Could this spark a broader wave of municipal boycotts worldwide?

IranView24 will be closely following this unfolding trend.
