Iran has executed the individual responsible for the deadly armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, which took place in January 2023.
According to a statement released by Iran’s Judiciary on Wednesday, the assailant was found guilty of murder, illegal possession of firearms, and disturbing public order, and was subsequently sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out following the completion of all judicial procedures.
The attack occurred on January 27, 2023, when the perpetrator stormed the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran and opened fire, killing one embassy staff member and injuring two others.
During interrogations, the attacker cited personal motives behind the incident, though the act drew swift international attention and temporarily strained diplomatic relations between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
Iranian authorities condemned the attack at the time and pledged a full investigation, emphasising their commitment to protecting all diplomatic missions on Iranian soil.
